Why can't you miss this excursion?

A trip to Santo Domingo is a must if you want to experience one of the most vibrant capital cities in the Caribbean. The joy of its people, the rich culture evident in every corner of the city, and the infectious Latin rhythm that fills its streets make the Dominican capital a truly special place.

Santo Domingo is one of the first cities where the Spanish colony settled. Visiting its hidden corners is fascinating for understanding its past , present , and even its future.

On the other hand, places like Boca Chica beach or the Three Eyes Lake will show you that not everything in this city is the work of human beings, but that nature also plays a very important role for Dominicans.

So, this is an activity you can’t miss during your vacation in the Dominican Republic.

History of the city of Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo is the oldest continuously inhabited European-founded city in the Americas and a must-see destination for tourists visiting the Dominican Republic. It receives thousands of visitors daily, who stay in its all-inclusive hotels, explore its streets, and take hundreds of excursions. It is located just under 200 kilometers from Punta Cana Airport and 125 kilometers from La Romana.

Originally called Santo Domingo de Guzmán , the city was founded in 1496, when Bartolomé Colón moved the Spanish colonists from what is now Luperón in search of a place with better conditions.

From there, Spain’s expansion was organized, with courts and administrative offices established at the beginning of the 16th century. In 1589, Santo Domingo was seized by pirates , who even took the church bells when they received their ransom.

In 1795, Santo Domingo came under French rule, as the French had seized half of the island of Hispaniola and gradually advanced until they occupied it completely. However, the African slaves brought by the French rebelled and expelled them, even capturing Santo Domingo. The Dominicans managed to defeat the Haitians, and in 1844, the Dominican Republic became independent, with Santo Domingo as its capital.

In the 20th century, the dictator Rafael Trujillo changed the name of the capital to ” Ciudad Trujillo” , until in 1961 it recovered its name again, this time without the previous ” de Guzmán “.

Today, Santo Domingo is a major international tourist destination , and those who visit it express their opinion that history is palpable in every corner.

    Frequently asked questions

What can you do on the Santo Domingo tour?

As we have mentioned before, the colonial zone of Santo Domingo is the main historical and cultural site of the Dominican Republic.

Very close by is Calle Conde , a pedestrian walkway with a wide variety of shops where you can buy souvenirs for your return trip to Punta Cana. We always recommend that our clients carry cash for these purchases.

This tour, while primarily urban, also incorporates nature. In Tres Ojos National Park, you can experience what those early explorers, like Christopher Columbus and his brother Bartholomew, felt upon reaching port and discovering the natural beauty of Hispaniola . Within the park, three turquoise lakes welcome visitors to a place that was once home to the Taíno people.

From here, the road will take us directly to the hustle and bustle of Santo Domingo, where we'll begin our visit to the Colonial Zone . The first building that will catch your eye is the Cathedral of Santa María la Menor , a symbol of the Catholic Church's early presence on the island . From there, we can visit the Columbus Lighthouse or the Museum of Modern Art, but the cultural options are countless within its streets.
